EZ Ice Review 2024

60 Minute Backyard Rink™

Updated: January 9, 2024 by Bill Burniece

In this EZ Ice Rink review, I’ll take an in-depth look at the features and performance so you can decide if it is the right backyard rink for you.

Introduction:

The EZ ICE 60 Minute Backyard Rink™ is the only backyard hockey rink that assembles in less than one hour, on any surface, and without using any tools.

Very cool.

Below, I’ll show you video evidence that backs up their claim.

What Is EZ Ice?

EZ ICE rinks use real ice, not synthetic ice like PolyGlide ice rinks.

These rinks are made from the same high-density, durable, plastic material as your local rink and even NHL boards.

EZ ICE rinks are engineered to survive the harshest winters and withstand your hardest slap shots.

There are different sizes of rinks available, and since they are modular you can expand a smaller rink into a larger one.

Installs On Any Surface

EZ ICE works on lawns, driveways, parking lots, basketball & tennis courts, patios, and even fields. The only requirement is a flat surface – including your lawn even if it is frozen solid.

No Tools Needed

Installation requires no tools at all. No hammers, saws, drills, nails, screws, stakes, or measuring devices. These rinks quickly clip together without any hassle.

Takes 60 Minutes

These rinks are so easy to assemble that they have been built in as little as 5 minutes, but never more than 60 minutes. Takedown and storage is fast and easy too.

Who Created The EZ Rink?

EZ ICE was created by inventor and now CEO Dylan Gastel.

Dylan’s vision was to design a backyard ice rink that was super simple to assemble.

If you watch the setup videos I embedded below I think you’ll agree that he accomplished his goal.

The EZ ICE rink is hands down the easiest solution for quality backyard hockey rinks that last.

Dylan has put together a very cool mission and that is to “join the EZ ICE family and help us get 1 million kids Off the Device and On the Ice™.”

His rinks are all designed & manufactured in the USA with mostly U.S. parts and their patent-pending bracket and strap system that makes installation so easy.

OK, that’s cheating, right? How about watching an 80 year old couple assemble an EZ ICE rink instead:

What Is The Best Size To Choose For Your EZ ICE Rink?

The best size for your rink depends most on the size of your available space. Installation requires no measuring but knowing the approximate area of your space is helpful.

Another factor is knowing the approximate age of the skaters. Here are some things to consider:

  • Kids will have fun on any size rink. If you plan to include several players you can go as large as your space will allow
  • Rounded corners are best for playing hockey. However, you can choose square corners too
  • For municipalities and commercial use, you should factor 25-50 square feet per skater
  • A regulation hockey rink is 85’ x 200’. But most buyers choose rinks between 20’ x 40’ and 60’ x 100’

What Are The Dimensions Of The Boards?

Each original straight EZ ICE board is 16” tall x 60” long x 1.5” wide.

The PRO EZ ICE boards are the same height and width, and are 59″ long.

With the added 1 inch board connector, each section of board will be 5 ft. EZ ICE boards are perfect for keeping the puck inside the rink.

How High Do The Rinks Walls Go?

With the PRO Home Arena System, you can stack your boards to make double-height or arena-height walls.

Double-height walls are 32 inches tall, and arena-height walls are 48 inches tall. If you want to stick with the classic rink, your boards will be 16 inches tall.

EZ ICE Rink Pro & Cons

EZ Ice Pros:

  • Easy to set up with no tools
  • Several ways to configure your rink
  • Low maintenance
  • Enjoy skating all year long

EZ Ice Cons:

  • It needs to be set up on a level ground
  • The side plastics supports could be made of a stronger material
  • Your skates will dull faster
  • It takes a little more effort to skate on it

Wrapping It Up

I grew up in Minnesota in the 1970’s.

In the depths of winter, my father hosed down our backyard each night so we could turn our little backyard into a makeshift hockey rink.

‘Rink’ is a loose term here since it was basically a slab of ice on an uneven surface with snowbanks as ‘boards’.

I remember spending a lot of time digging in those snowbanks for lost pucks, only to find most of them in the Spring when the snow finally melted.

I would have loved to have had a high-quality backyard rink like the EZ rink since it would have been such a step up from what we had.

Now, not only is it a snap to set up, EZ ICE Rinks give you a more realistic hockey experience.
